Montezuma Road in the White River National Forest in Summit County Colorado is beautiful all year but our favorite times to visit are during the heat of the summer and for ski season in winter. During the summer the temperatures at this altitude are cool and mild and the nature factor is over the top with wildlife and beautiful hikes & drives. In the Winter EPIC skiing and riding is just around the corner in two directions at Keystone Ski Resort and Arapaho Basin (A-basin). Plus this site puts you in the midst of epic back country skiing at the top of Montezuma Rd near the Peru Creek Trail-head or Webster Pass.
Campsites are plentiful in summer and few in winter. You must use a previously used campsite and this area is patrolled by Rangers. Self contained units can camp along the river areas but not tent campers. Rock fire rings are available at most sites. If you try winter camping up here you need to be prepared that the woods are not accessible, have chains & be self sufficient. Use one of the sites already dug out and understand that they will be plowing the road and so be out of the way and ready to dig yourself back out. Check in with the Dillon Ranger District for the Dispersed Camping Guidelines along Montezuma road before you park.
Nearest Dump Station is Breckenridge Sanitation District at the corner of Swan Mountain Rd and Hwy 9 and the cost is $5.
Potable water year round so long as the faucet stays operational. They installed a frost free spigot in 2014
Trash should be minimized while here, there are no public dumpsters that we have found.
